The Truth about Education Freedom Accounts

Upper Valley Democrats and Mascoma Forward, September 27, 2021

An in-depth look at New Hampshire’s new “Educational Freedom Savings Accounts” — the most radical undercutting of public education in the nation. NH Republicans have been trying to dismantle our strong public schools for decades, and this year they made major gains in their desire to do away with what we know and love as our public schools.

Voting Rights Under Attack

The Hanover/Lyme Town Dems organized the monthly Upper Valley Dems program with a  focus on how voting rights are under attack and what is being done about that. Our guests were Senator Maggie Hassan, who we initially thought would be with us for only 15 minutes but stayed close to half an hour. She is one of the sponsors in the Senate of the For the People Voting Act which she described and about which she answered questions.

Russ Muirhead is one of Hanover/Lyme’s four House Reps in Concord where he sits on the Election Law committee and has a first hand view of the horrifying ways Republicans are trying to limit voting rights. Drawing from his expertise as a government professor, he spoke briefly about the history of voting rights and the times when the Federal Government has passed major voting legislation. He also spoke about a non-germane amendment that passed in his committee last week. Its entire purpose is to push back against the possibility that the For the People Voting Act might pass, and it mandates that statewide races must then be administered separately from federal races. Yes, two checklists, two forms of registration, two different approaches to absentee voting. This is where I stop and go bang my head against the wall for a few minutes.

Our final speaker was Brian Beihl, Deputy Director of Open Democracy. His part of the program included slides, action plans, and links for becoming involved. At the end of the program, people clearly were not ready to leave and many continued to ask questions and seek a better understanding of what was going on.

Insurrectionists in Our Own Back Yard

After the Insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, many of us were left with questions. Where did these people come from? Who are they? Were they white supremacists? Free Staters? Patriots? Anarchists? Traitors? Join Mascoma Forward in the monthly UVDems’ Programming Series for a discussion with Matt Hongoltz-Hepling, author of A Libertarian Walks Into A Bear, and Heather Tsavaris, counter-terrorism expert. These two will explore the overlap between the libertarian Free State movement in NH and the insurrectionists at the Capitol.
