Calling all Activists!

Many of us are veteran volunteers who are used to door knocking and engaging our fellow citizens in civil confabs right before election day. It’s called GOTV or getoutthevote. COVID has knocked instead and made these engagements almost extinct. Some of us will be asked to place door hangers on a specific person’s door. Most of us will not be pressed into service. That said, there are plenty of things we can and must do before November 3.

We can write postcards (see the Shaheen opportunity below); we can make phone calls from the comfort of our home (contact Eleanor Patten at epatten@organizenh.org); we can make sure the people in our vicinity who are turning 18 get escorted (not in cuffs) to the local town clerk and get registered to vote; speaking of registering, please look around for non-voters who you can convince to get registered; you can talk to lazy voters who don’t think voting matters. Plus you can volunteer to help us install 4×8 signs the next few weekends (call Barbara at 448-1119 or email babswork@comcast.net). LOTS to do!

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 29 at 9 p.m., the first presidential debate between the current WH occupant and the former vice president, Joe Biden, will take place. The format is a moving target. Whether there is an audience or not seems to be a bit blurry but it is on. Normally, there would be a gathering at Gusanoz but chances are we’ll be watching at home. This will require some kind of libation and maybe a few friends at the proper social distance.

Our Monday night program, the UVDems’ long-awaited VETO NIGHT, has moved to Monday, October 5! Our reps are really going to the mats for this one. 4,276. Let us repeat: 4,276. 4,276 represents the number of voters in New Hampshire who, although they grabbed a Democratic primary ballot, wrote in Sununu as their preferred gubernatorial candidate. Obviously, these well-meaning voters are not aware of the egregious and damaging vetoes that have taken place in the last few years. Our hardworking representatives have put together a program that will outline the bills, many of which were bi-partisan, that this self-proclaimed “Trump’s Trump” governor has cast. We WANT you to be angry about this and we NEED you to vote for Dan Feltes so the citizen-friendly agenda of the Democrats can move forward.

So, here we are, five and a bit weeks to go. Pick up your signs. Be proud to display your standards. And good luck to the most important people in this–US.

Honor RBG’s Legacy!

Today is a day of heartbreak, sorrow, reflection and terror . . . We are sad that Ruth Bader Ginsburg has left us. She left us better off than we were when she began her quest to lift up all women. Women, young and old, need to reflect on the rights for women RBG fought for her entire storied career. Our lives are richer and more vibrant because she fought that fight.

Let us honor RBG by doing our best to fight for Democrats up and down the ticket on November 3rd and through our absentee ballots, which will be arriving in our mailboxes sometime after October 4th. PLEASE don’t skip voting for a candidate because you thought yours would have been better. PLEASE don’t write in ANYONE. That ship has sailed. We are in the fight of our lives right now. The consequences are dire and that’s not even hubristic.

Just look at what Sununu has vetoed! Amongst the 79 vetoes, there is something for everyone! Something that adversely affects just about all of us, if not the family leave bill, it could be the minimum wage bill; if not his climate change denial, it’s taking sorely needed money from public education to give to corporations and other private venture groups. On and on.

Speaking of vetoes . . . we, the UVDems, are proud and excited about our upcoming program on Sununu’s vetoes (Monday, September 28). We’ve asked three of our eminent reps to talk about those vetoes and they are delivering. We will be treated to a program, carefully and passionately crafted, illustrating what, exactly, all these vetoes mean going forward. Our reps worked hard on these bills, many of which were bi-partisan. They have a lot to say about it. Don’t miss this program.

And SIGNS. We are awash in signs and dream of the entire Upper Valley blooming with Democratic candidates’ signs. Please check below, find the depot closest to you and pick up signs for the entire ticket in your town. We need to neutralize our opponents’ efforts so come on over, pick up a set of signs and festoon your abode!
